Whether we know it or not, Maths always gets incorporated in our artwork even in simple sketches, as can be seen in the case of this plastic water bottle.

At the heart of still-life composition lies a delicate dance of symmetry and balance, generally guided by mathematical principles. When it comes to the curation of still life art, artists arrange objects to geometric shapes and spatial relationships, drawing upon concepts of symmetry and (yet again) the Golden Ratio to create visually captivating art pieces. Objects may align along invisible grid lines or adhere to the harmonious proportions dictated by the Fibonacci sequence, yielding compositions that resonate with aesthetic harmony.


Specifically, in this artwork, lighting plays a critical role, with the usage of light and shadow; this bottle's three-dimensional presence is enhanced on a two-dimensional surface of paper. Through careful composition, the bottle was initially placed in the frame to establish a visual balance, thereby arranging the object in a geometric form, once again taking us back to the concept of symmetry.


Perspective, essential to the foundation of still life art, relies heavily on mathematical underpinnings. By leveraging geometric calculations and vanishing points, the composition is imbued with depth and spatial realism. Through the skilful manipulation of converging lines and foreshortening, we can craft scenes that beckon the viewer into a world of illusionary dimensionality.


Proportion and scale, yet again elements which are vital to the realistic depiction of still life objects, are meticulously honed through mathematical precision. Techniques of measurement, scaling and proportionality are ensure to maintain consistent ratios and appear realistically sized. By adhering to and keeping mathematical principles in mind, we can achieve a harmonious balance in the composition; thereby allowing the element to occupy a rightful place within the visual narrative.


In essence, mathematics serves as the silent architect behind the art of still life. By understanding and harnessing mathematical principles, we can elevate their craft, transforming mundane objects into captivating visual narratives that resonate with beauty and meaning.
